Teaching Statement

My goal as a voice teacher is to equip you with the technical tools and stylistic sensibilities necessary for singing the repertoire that is most artistically fulfilling to you.  By drawing on my experiences as a performer, conductor, classroom teacher, and private instructor, I aim to employ an individualized pedagogical approach with each of my students. I make a significant effort to ensure that my vocal instruction is catered to the needs of your instrument and informed by the manner in which you conceptualize your own voice. In this way, I strive to establish a co-constructive environment in my studio so that you, the student, are an active participant in both the teaching and learning process. With a strong focus on breath management, tone production, and musical expressivity, my methods prioritize healthy singing as the foundation for artistic freedom.

Testimonials

I cannot overstate how helpful studying with Luke has been for me. His ability to identify a problem and present a possible solution in a way that is both easy to understand and easy to apply has helped me to understand my voice better as well as grow significantly, not only in my technique and sound, but also in the way I approach a piece. I always leave my lessons feeling confident in my progress and optimistic about the areas I can continue to improve. With Luke, I have become more skilled, knowledgeable, and confident as a singer.

Luke has an excellent sense of how far to push students to promote growth, but not so far as to overwhelm them. We have loved having Luke as our teacher!
— Valerie Nelson, Parent of Student and Artistic Director of Tennessee Vocal Arts Academy
Luke is always focused on his student’s individual goals. As his student, I had an interest in singing rock and pop songs, so we incorporated some of that music in my repertoire in addition to works he selected to improve my technique. He encourages healthy vocal technique regardless of genre. Luke’s expertise and flexibility make him a versatile teacher.
